CHEAP FENCING

Difficulty Rating:

While deciding on what to do for a fence to keep people back from the props for my 2006 yard haunt. I debated between an expensive and time consuming PVC fence, or straight wood fencing... and finally decided to use lathes. I had a bundle lying around at the house from some plaster repairs I had done about a year before, and put it to good use. Lathe bundles can be found at any home improvement stores, in bundles of about 50, for only $5 or $6. And, they usually come worn out anyways, so it gives a good effect of an old rotted fence.

Materials Needed

  • Lathes (sold in bundles of 50 or so at almost any home improvement store for $5-$6)
  • 1/2" drywall screws

Putting them together is simple. Just lay them down in the way you want them, put down a cross beam or two, and start screwing them together. Easy to manage 4 foot sections!

To stake them into the ground, I cut points into one or two additional lathes, drove those into the ground, and then screwed them onto the backs of one or two of the existing fence pieces.

To join sections together to give them a bit more strength, I just screwed the ends of the cross-beams together as well. See images below...

Caveats
There is a problem going this route. They are flimsy. It rained for two days before Halloween, so between the wind and the rain, lots of repairs were needed. So keep some extra lathes around, and a hell of a lot of screws, oh, and keep those 18volt cordless drill batteries charged, oh, and don't forget the Wonder Bread.
